The contribution of academics from Universitas Gadjah Mada, particularly from the Faculty of Agriculture, was highlighted in a strategic discussion on strengthening the national food system through their participation in a focus group discussion (FGD) organized by Badan Pengawasan Keuangan dan Pembangunan. The FGD, titled “From Intervention to Independence: Assessing the Sustainability of KSPEAN as a Foundation for National Food System Independence,” was held on April 28–29, 2026, at the BPKP Regional Office of the Special Region of Yogyakarta.

Yogyakarta, February 10, 2026 – Gadjah Mada University held the Professorial Inauguration Ceremony for Prof. Dr. Jangkung Handoyo Mulyo, M.Ec, as a Full Professor in the Field of Agricultural Economics and Agribusiness Management. This moment marks an important milestone in his academic journey and in his scholarly contributions to the development of Indonesia’s agricultural economy.
In his inaugural address, Prof. Jangkung emphasized that food self-sufficiency is a strategic foundation for national sovereignty and welfare. Food is not merely viewed as an economic commodity but also possesses strong social, political, and cultural dimensions. Amid global uncertainties such as climate change, supply chain disruptions, and price fluctuations, a self-reliant food system is key to ensuring a country does not depend on external parties. Additionally, he highlighted the importance of improving farmers’ welfare through enhanced market access, more efficient input costs, and adequate infrastructure support, using a cross-sectoral approach.
Yogyakarta, November 28, 2025 — The Agricultural Economics and Agribusiness Study Program at Universitas Gadjah Mada held a guest lecture for the Agricultural Politics course, featuring Prof. Akira Ishida from Kobe University, Japan. The guest lecture was themed “Food and Nutrition Security.”
The guest lecture delivered by Prof. Akira Ishida discussed the relationship between poverty, inequality, Hunger, and food policy in developing countries. He explained that food insecurity is not only caused by limited production but also by unequal access to resources, education, and economic opportunities. Using a microeconomic approach, Prof. Ishida showed how household socioeconomic conditions affect consumption patterns, nutrition, and well-being.
Guest Lecture on Research Methodology: Qualitative Approaches in Agricultural Socioeconomic Research
Yogyakarta, November 28, 2025 – The Agricultural Economics and Agribusiness Study Program, Faculty of Agriculture, held a Guest Lecture for the Research Methodology Course, featuring Shahrin Shahab, M.A., PhD Candidate and Graduate Teaching Assistant at the School of Public Policy, Oregon State University, USA, as the guest speaker. This activity was carried out to strengthen students’ understanding of various research approaches, particularly qualitative research methodology, which is increasingly relevant to agricultural socioeconomic studies.
Yogyakarta, November 5, 2025 – The Agricultural Economics and Agribusiness Study Program at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) held a guest lecture in the Agricultural Economics course. The lecture focused on the theme “The Concept of Sustainable Value Chains in Agriculture,” featuring Dr. Adhitya Marendra Kiloes, a Postdoctoral Researcher at The University of Queensland.
In his lecture, Dr. Adhitya emphasized the importance of integrating economic, social, and environmental aspects, known as the triple bottom line principle, as a strategy for achieving a sustainable value chain in the agricultural sector. Students were encouraged to understand how to manage agricultural value chains efficiently and inclusively through innovation, public-private partnerships, and technology, adding value for businesses, communities, and the environment, and achieving resilient, climate-adaptive agriculture.
Yogyakarta, August 28, 2025 — A total of 39 students from the Agricultural Economics and Agribusiness Undergraduate Program, Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), were officially graduated in the Undergraduate and Diploma Graduation Ceremony for Period IV of the 2024/2025 Academic Year, which was held on Thursday, August 28, 2025, at Grha Sabha Pramana, UGM.
This graduation ceremony marked a significant milestone, signifying the culmination of the students’ studies and the commencement of their journey to contribute to society as competent, adaptable, and agripreneurial graduates. The presence of parents, lecturers, and the academic community added to the solemnity of the event, which was also filled with messages of motivation and appreciation for the achievements of the graduates.

Yogyakarta, August 26, 2025 – Students of Universitas Gajdah Mada have achieved another proud milestone. Ghiffari Putra Agoeng, a student of the Agricultural Economics and Agribusiness Study Program, Faculty of Agriculture, UGM, successfully secured first place in the Business Plan Competition (BPC) at the National Cooperative Jamboree (Jamkopnas) 2025.
Ghiffari served as team leader in the competition, representing the Universitas Gadjah Mada Student Cooperative (Kopma UGM). The team presented an innovation titled “Parisa: Processor of Natural and Renewable Liter Scented Accelerator,” a waste processing device capable of efficiently converting organic waste into compost through an integrated technology-based decomposition process.
