Yogyakarta, September 17, 2025 – The Agricultural Economics and Agribusiness Study Program, Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) held a guest lecture for the Agricultural Socio-Economic Assessment Course with the topic “Field Work Ethics in Social Sciences”. The lecture featured Dr. Lorenz Probst from Boku University, Austria, an experienced academic and researcher in the field of social research methodology and field ethics. Students enthusiastically attended the lecture to deepen their understanding of ethical practices in agricultural socio-economic research.
In his presentation, Dr. Probst emphasized the importance of applying field research ethics to maintain researcher integrity, respect participant rights, and ensure that research results provide tangible benefits to society. Students were invited to reflect on the social responsibilities of researchers in various cultural contexts and agricultural communities.
This activity is also part of the 2025 Impactful Campus Competition Program (PKKB) from the Higher Education Data Center (PDDIKTI), which aims to improve the quality of research-based learning, broaden international perspectives, and foster social awareness and professionalism among students in the field of agricultural economics.
In addition to enriching academic understanding, this guest lecture also supports the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4: Quality Education – improving students’ capacity in ethical and quality social research. SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities – fostering sensitivity to social and cultural diversity in field research. SDG 16: Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions – encouraging the application of ethics, honesty, and transparency in socio-economic research practices.
This semester, students from the class of 2022 will be deployed in the field for 4 days to conduct research for the Agricultural Socio-Economic Assessment course. Through this guest lecture, students are expected to be able to apply ethical principles in every stage of agricultural socio-economic research.
