Yogyakarta, October 15, 2025 — The Agricultural Economics and Agribusiness Study Program, Faculty of Agriculture, UGM, has carried out a community service activity in Nawungan I Hamlet, Selopamioro Village, Imogiri District, Bantul Regency. This activity is part of the Agricultural Socio-Economics Department Grant program. It is an effort by the EPA Study Program to encourage community empowerment by developing local agribusiness potential. The community service activity, entitled “Utilizing the Potential of Nawungan 1 Hamlet as an Agricultural and Rural Tourism Destination,” was inspired by the hamlet’s great potential to develop agrotourism based on agriculture and local culture.

The event featured guest speaker Ms. Fidarini Devi Widasari, S.P., M.A., who shared insights on strategic steps in developing a tourist village that is attractive to tourists. Nawungan I Hamlet has advantages, including beautiful natural scenery, expansive “glowing” shallot fields that have become the village’s icon, and a wealth of traditional culture. According to Ms. Fida, this potential can be optimized through the creation of attractive tourism packages, social media promotional strategies, and the formation of a tourism village group or management committee as a sustainable management framework.

Through this community service activity, it is hoped that Nawungan I Hamlet can begin to pioneer the development of a tourist village that not only improves the community’s welfare but also preserves the environment and local culture. This agrotourism development aligns with the spirit of sustainable development and offers the community opportunities to actively participate in managing tourist destinations based on rural potential.

This activity also supports the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 8 on increasing economic opportunities for communities, SDG 11 on sustainable village development, SDG 12 on responsible use of resources, and SDG 15 on preserving the environment and agricultural areas of Nawungan I.
